Aliki Kirmitsi

04-11-2016 to 31-01-2017

Biography

Aliki Kirmitsi (b 1981) is based between Cyprus and London. She studied interactive arts at Manchester University (1999-2002) and continued her post-graduate studies at Chelsea College of Art & Design, London, specialising in spatial design (2004).

Upon her return to Cyprus, she began designing commercial and domestic spaces (including an award-winning restaurant), also familiarising herself with designing through a lens while working as an art director for film.

In 2008, she moved to print as a medium of expression, set designing for photography for various publications. In 2010, she began collaborating with artists and agencies in London and moved there in 2012. She has since worked with a number of photographers, publications, advertising campaigns and agencies, and her clients include The Gourmand, Harrods, O2, Cos, Selfridges, The Telegraph Luxury, Kinfolk, Hunger Magazine and Elle Decoration, among others.

In 2014, the international publication Set Design, dedicated to contemporary set design for photography, featured her work among other artists from around the world. In 2015, she was voted as one of the ‘9 best set designers to know right now’, and her work was exhibited in both the 125Live photography exhibition and publication.

She has dedicated her work to the weaving of stories between space, object and light, forever exploring the conversation that exists between these elements.

Her huge fascination with food as a sculptural element has pushed her exploration of the material both as a form and as a tool of cultural and social investigation, connectivity and character representation.

This is her first work exhibited in Cyprus; it is divided into two parts, No Game and A Food Map, in which she uses food as her tool to tap into social issues, inviting thought about the relationship between man and food. A Food Map was created for the purpose of this exhibition, and it marks the beginning of a study of food and eating rituals as portraiture of social groups.
