In the framework of The Wednesday Lecture series, the A. G. Leventis Gallery is presenting a lecture by Dr. Yiannis Toumazis, former Deputy Minister of Culture, on the 4th of October 2023, entitled "A Glimpse into Famagusta’s cultural heyday: A treasure trove of Greek Cypriot art returned by the Turkish Cypriot community to the Greek Cypriot community."

In 2019, in a historic agreement between the presidents of the two communities, a great number of artworks were returned from the Turkish-Cypriots to the Greek-Cypriots, as one of the confidence-building measures agreed upon between the two communities. 219 artworks that had been abandoned in the northern part of the island in 1974 were returned to their legal owners through the Bicommunal Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.

Many of the returned artworks belong to famous Greek-Cypriot painters, among them one of the most-important artists of modern Cypriot art, Famagusta-born George Pol. Georghiou. The greater number of artworks belonged to the Famagusta Municipal Gallery.
