SPEAKER: Constantin Economides, Curator of the temporary exhibition 'Metamorphosis Belgian Art 1860-1930'

In the context of the monthly Wednesday Lectures, the A. G. Leventis Gallery is delighted to welcome Constantin Economides, a distinguished art historian and head curator of the temporary exhibition of the A. G. Leventis Gallery 'Metamorphosis - Belgian Art 1860-1930'. 

Mr. Economides will present the artistic journey of Pericles Pantazis, the only Greek in the intimate circle of Belgian Impressionists. 

Pericles Pantazis was born in Athens in 1849. After graduating from the School of Arts in Athens, he left for Munich, as did many young artists of the time, where he intended to continue his career. The conservative artistic milieu of the Bavarian capital, however, was ill-suited to his restless spirit, and he left for Paris, where he stayed for several months, discovering while there the art of the Impressionists, before finally settling in Brussels in 1872. There he met and associated with numerous artists and became part of the creative life and avant-garde movements of Belgium. Influenced by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet and Édouard Manet, Pantazis created a pictorial world of his own with his expressive realistic portraits, his still lifes with their imaginative play of light and shadow and his atmospheric landscape. His role in the development of European art was acknowledged as early as the start of the 20th century, and he was considered one of the pioneers of Impressionism in Belgium.
