The A. G. Leventis Gallery is contributing to a series of lectures dedicated to residents of Occupied Cyprus, Circles C and D, of the Famagusta and Karpasia Municipalities with the lecture entitled "Leontios Machairas meets the artist Bonaventura Peeters the Elder". This series is organized by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture, in collaboration with the Famagusta Municipality.

This Monday, November 24, at 19:00, Nadia Anaxagoras, Art and Literature Theorist, and Myrto Hatzaki, Curator of the Paris Collection of the A. G. Leventis Gallery, will correlate word and image as they discuss the port city of Famagusta. Looking at a text written by Leontios Machairas and a painting by Bonaventura that is held in the A. G. Leventis Collection, each speaker will make a presentation focused on the artwork or the text. Using the words of the island’s great chronicler and the history of art, they aim to describe the port of Famagusta at a time when the town was at the peak of its glory.

The painting by Bonaventure held in the A. G. Leventis Gallery is currently being studied by experts at Britain's National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the RKD, the  Netherland’s Institute for Art History, and it appears that an exciting and intriguing story may yet be unveiled!

We invite you to get to know Leontios Machairas afresh, and meet the Dutch artist who-- although he may never have visited Famagusta in person, but only in his imagination-- created a beautiful image of this enchanting city.
