An experiential workshop for adults with art therapists Savina Ioannou and Vasiliki Papachristodoulou.

The art therapy programme ‘Rooted in Creativity’ is a series of workshops hosted by the A. G. Leventis Gallery in the context of providing integrated, comprehensive and human-centred care for individuals with refugee and migration experiences. The initiative draws inspiration from the themes explored in the Gallery’s current temporary exhibition titled ‘From Asia Minor to Cyprus: Heyday – Catastrophe – Displacement – Rebirth’.

During this experiential workshop, the participants will have the opportunity to visit the exhibition, to focus on specific exhibits with the help and encouragement of the therapists and at the end to create their own works of art. The creative process through the visual arts will allow the participants to observe things from an aesthetic perspective and dimension – something that is particularly useful for the painful and traumatic memories of refugeehood and displacement.

Through art therapy, the narrative approach of the exhibition and the exhibits, participants will have the opportunity to choose which stories they want to reflect on, and at the same time, they will explore stories of hope and dreams. Exchanging stories – sharing – in a therapeutic setting offers an experience of mutual empathy, reducing individual trauma to a collective one. Therefore, this freedom of expression makes the experience multisensory and highly experiential, with the visual materials and creative process ultimately transmuting into building materials to heal wounds.

∙ Participants are invited to bring an object with them that reflects displacement and contributes to the preservation of memory.
∙ The workshop is not aimed at a specific audience or people with special talents in art – it is for anyone and everyone who wishes to take part regardless of abilities and skills.
