‘What power do you think you have, that gives you the right to discuss such violence?’

Harold Pinter’s one-act play Ashes to Ashes (1996) is perhaps the most mysterious work of the Nobel laureate, and in May we will see Stela Fyrogeni and Andreas Araouzos on stage studying its associations and symbolism.

The play has been described as ‘an encrypted parable of the acceptance of violence’. Rebecca and Devlin seem to be in the living room of their house, but their relationship is never defined. He seems to be interrogating her, and she reveals personal images. The discussion is constantly changing: there is a reference to a third person, some relatives and some strangers, some guides, a factory, an echo of a police siren and a new disease…

Fyrogeni and Araouzos, attempting the interpretive decoding of Pinter’s text, undertake the direction of their roles, while the sets and costumes are designed by Rea Olympiou, the lighting by Nikos Mylonas and the music by Stavros Makris. The production is supported by the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture.
