Established in May 1979 by Anastasios G. Leventis, the A. G. Leventis Foundation has always had a significant involvement in the social, educational and cultural life of Cyprus and Greece. An important aspect of the Foundation’s dynamic presence in cultural affairs is its aesthetically and educationally unique art collections.

For the first time ever, the three art collections of the A. G. Leventis Foundation – the Paris Collection of European artworks, the Greek Collection of works of the 19th and 20th centuries, and the Cyprus Collection of works of the 1st generation of Cypriot artists until 1960 – were united and presented at the National Gallery in Athens, shortly before it was closed for renovation and expansion. Evocative Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces, paintings that suggest poetic feelings of serenity, pictorial dialogues of light and colour, dreamlike images and suddenly modern artistic approaches composed a unique exhibition, a milestone in the 20-year-long exhibition activity of the National Gallery in Athens. 67 works of European art – including, among other major names, Canaletto, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Marc Chagall; 176 works by 90 artists representing various periods, movements and stylistic approaches in the history of Modern Greek art; and 27 works by 8 important 20th-century Cypriot painters were exhibited for three months before being transferred to their new home in Cyprus: the A. G. Leventis Gallery.
