Creative workshop: "Portraits"

09-03-2024 to 09-03-2024

A New Series of Creative Philosophy Workshops for Children with ‘The Young Philosophers’ by Marina Katsaris and Rebecca Katsaris.

Do you think I can fit my whole self in a portrait? Can I find myself in portraits of others? Imagine if the world or even the whole universe had portraits of their own: what would they look like? On the occasion of the A. G. Leventis Gallery’s 10th anniversary, Marina and Rebecca Katsaris have created, especially for our young visitors, a series of three unique Philosophy for Children (P4C) workshops; drawing inspiration from the Gallery’s portraits, they focus on the relationship between self-awareness and coexistence. The aim of the workshops is to discuss the importance of inclusion and diversity, as well as to promote empathy, compassion and kindness. Compassionate connections between us enable understanding and sharing the feelings of others, creating a sense of solidarity and support. By acknowledging the experiences of others, we foster a more inclusive and compassionate society.

The workshops will be conducted in Greek and will be held in three independent sessions.

1st Workshop: ‘Who am I?’

‘Who Am I?’ – perhaps the most fundamental question in every human being’s life. Our identity gives us our sense of self. It is a set of traits that distinguishes us from other people, because while we might have some things in common with others, no one else has the exact same combination of traits as we do. Our identity also gives us a sense of continuity, encapsulates our core personal values and beliefs about the world and essentially plays an important role in how we treat others and how we carry ourselves in the world.

The workshop leaders, Marina and Rebecca Katsaris, based on the proven enquiry-based pedagogy that aims to help children develop critical, creative, caring and collaborative thinking skills, known as Philosophy for Children (P4C), and inspired by the painting by Giorgos Mavroides, "Girl in White Shirt", invite our young friends on an exciting philosophical journey. The children will venture on a self-awareness journey through role-play and an array of visual materials, as well as the utilisation of a number of drama techniques, and will have the opportunity to explore and reflect more deeply on the multidimensional concept of identity.
