He studied architecture at the National Technical University in Athens (1931-1936). In 1947 he went to Brazil and, on Le Corbusier’s recommendation, worked in preparing studies and designs for Brasilia. During the same year he travelled to Paris, where he lived until 1960. He first worked for city planning in the Saint-Cloud suburb and then applied himself exclusively to painting; he held solo exhibitions in France, also worked as a stage designer and opened his own theatre. In 1980 a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He was one of the first artists internationally to introduce Art Informel; he nevertheless remained faithful to figurative painting.
