Still Life with Lilies, Anemones, Morning Glory and Other Flowers in a Glass Vase

Juan De Arellano (1614-1676)
Still Life with Lilies, Anemones, Morning Glory and Other Flowers in a Glass Vase
oil on canvas
AGLC 265 @ A.G Leventis Gallery

He started out as a painter of religious subjects, but, around the first half of the 1640s, he began to specialise in flower painting. Strongly influenced by Italian and Flemish painters, notably Daniel Seghers, he was the first Spanish painter to devote himself to floral still lifes. His works in this genre are marked by his predilection for primary colours and are remarkable for the vivacity and freshness of the flowers.
