Distillation Conversations_yasemin
A Performance with Eleni Mouzourou and Natis (Hasan Aksaygın).

How can plants become companions in exploring our connections across territory, language and (un)belonging? For this conversation in the format of a lecture performance, we, Eleni Mouzourou and Hasan Aksaygın, visual artists born and raised in the south and north parts of Cyprus, respectively, and currently based in Berlin, have set the table to have an almost impossible conversation. Guided by the scent of jasmine, we examine the ways our (post)memories, experiences and perspectives of homeland intertwine, converge, separate and unite us. The project is a work in progress, reflecting the dynamic, interactive and open-ended process of memory, while challenging fossilised and unilateral cultures of remembrance within the context of (our) homeland.

With a focus on two popular and seemingly unrelated subjects in the artist’s oeuvre – the ‘Women’s Bazaar’ and the ‘Hard Years’ series – the exhibition hopes to present fresh perspectives and narratives of Cyprus and its people’s complex history.
