The A. G. Leventis Gallery, in the context of showcasing the first generation of Cypriot artists, has organized an exhibition on the landscape artist, Victor Ioannides (1903-1984). The Victor Ioannides: reflections on the sea exhibition focuses on the artist’s seascapes. Most paintings were created between 1969-1982 and depict scenes of the old port of Limassol and the boatyard.

Ioannides studied at the School of Arts (later known as the School of Fine Arts) in Athens under Georgios Iakovidis, Nikos Lytras and Spyridon Vikatos. During his studies, he worked as a cartoonist for newspapers and as an illustrator for the Μεγάλη Ελληνική Εγκυκλοπαίδεια [Great Greek Encyclopaedia]. In 1931 he returned permanently to Limassol. Together with Giorgos Fasouliotis he founded the Atelier (1936-1942), the first interior design and advertising workshop in Cyprus. Ιn the years 1936 and 1937 he worked at the satirical newspaper Το Γέλιο, [Laughter] as editor-in-chief and cartoonist. Ioannides also worked as an art teacher in secondary education (1931-1933, 1942-1965).

From 1951 to 1981 he showed his work in 21 solo exhibitions in Cyprus and many group exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad. In 1963 he represented Cyprus at the Alexandria Biennale. In 1984 he was honoured for his artistic contribution with the gold medal of the City of Limassol.

Τhe A. G. Leventis Gallery would like to thank the Victor N. Ioannides Foundation, and in particular Stelios Joannides, son of the artist Victoras N. Ioannides, for their assistance in the realization of the exhibition.
