Museums and Mental Health

In what ways can a museum help with our will-being? How can the museum as a space and its exhibits contribute as a treatment to users of mental services and people with chronic diseases? And how can someone benefit by having Art Therapy sessions in a museum? Very often museums have large spaces and can offer a low-risk environment in transmitting the virus during a pandemic. In addition, studies have shown that a visit at a museum can help combat feelings of social isolation and stress. Frequent… Διαβάστε περισσότερα

Reimagining the A. G. Leventis Gallery: Meditation with Art

This past year has changed our lives in more ways than one. We have faced fears, uncertainty, confusion and change. Many people have lost jobs, lost loved ones and suffered greatly, causing anxiety and depression. The pandemic has affected our ‘inside’ world as much as our ‘outside’ world; and so we ask, how can a museum help us heal? Can the museum space, an artwork, certain colours or shapes help us release our fears? Can they help us reframe our thoughts, relax and feel joy and fulfil… Διαβάστε περισσότερα

Black Gold Flakes, by Efi Spyrou

A ‘lightplay’, an active dialogue between the artwork and the viewer, the artist and the object, the artist and the viewer. An art intervention by Efi Spyrou, now in a new location — the entrance of the A. G. Leventis Gallery, proposing a renewed dialogue with the visitor. It is woven from black fabric absorbent tapes and yellow reflective tapes. Reflective tapes are usually placed on moving vehicles; the reflection of light makes the object visible in the dark. The fabric, quiet and sta… Διαβάστε περισσότερα

Ashes to Ashes: Fyrogeni and Araouzos in, perhaps, the most mysterious Pinter play

‘What power do you think you have, that gives you the right to discuss such violence?’ Harold Pinter’s one-act play Ashes to Ashes (1996) is perhaps the most mysterious work of the Nobel laureate, and in May we will see Stela Fyrogeni and Andreas Araouzos on stage studying its associations and symbolism. The play has been described as ‘an encrypted parable of the acceptance of violence’. Rebecca and Devlin seem to be in the living room of their house, but their relationship is n… Διαβάστε περισσότερα

The A. G. Leventis Gallery - International Museum Day 2021: ‘The Future of Museums: Recover and Recreate’ – Actions of the A. G. Leventis Gallery

Museums nowadays face severe problems due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Attendance, international collaborations and temporary exhibitions are limited. Educational programmes without students, guided tours without visitors and especially the rapid reduction of revenues for museums have had an impact on the design of research programmes and bring about changes in annual planning. However, although these elements are an indisputable reality, they are also a challenge: an invitation to professionals fr… Διαβάστε περισσότερα
