He was a painter of history scenes, of mural schemes and ceilings in Paris and Versailles, and of cartoons for tapestries, through all of which he promoted the Baroque style in French art. He studied under his father, the painter Noël Coypel, and his younger half-brother Noël-Nicolas and his son Charles-Antoine were also artists. Amongst other public honours, he was made Premier Peintre du Roi in 1715.
