About the artist

He studied at the School of Arts in Athens (1896-1900) and went on to study in Munich (1900-1905/1906). In 1909 he was appointed as professor at the Athens School of Arts, where he taught until 1939. His work went on display in solo and group exhibitions and international fairs, such as the Glaspalast in Munich (1905), Bordeaux (1907, gold medal), Rome (1911), Paris (1937) and the Venice Biennale (1934, 1936).   He received the Greek Award for Excellence in Arts and Letters (1937) and became an honorary member of the Munich Academy (1951).   The main part of his work is portraits, especially of elderly people; he also depicted historical and religious events, still lifes, landscapes and everyday scenes, reflecting the principles of academic painting.
