The students of the Fine and Applied Art Department present a collective installation entitled ‘Αφροδίτη/Aphrodite’.

The installation consists of various works by the undergraduate and postgraduate students from the areas of Graphic Design, Interior Design and Fashion Design and Image. These works – whether sculptural, advertising posters, photography, painting, collage etc. – come together as a whole and are reinvented in a collective layout where the viewer can investigate and explore while walking around and inside the space. Although the installation works as an entity, each work can also be regarded as an autonomous piece of work and count as a narrative for the story of Aphrodite as a Goddess, as a Mother, as a Mortal and as a Lover.

The students commenced working on this exhibition for a whole academic semester (January to June 2017) and all involved, students and faculty engaged in an ongoing conversation revolving around issues and concepts which result from the words Goddess, Mother, Mortal and Lover. An open and quite intense conversation going into concepts of identity, Cypriotness, beauty, and kitsch, resulted in reinstating of our perception.

The biggest challenge for the students was the process to deconstruct an already preconceived story and to reconstruct a contemporary myth for Aphrodite of the 21^st century. A major characteristic in the works has always been the experimentation, analysis, critical thinking, interdisciplinary approach and contemporary practice.

The installation ‘Αφροδίτη/Aphrodite’ takes place on the 2^nd floor of the A. G. Leventis Gallery in the Claude Monet Hall and it will be open for the public from 09.11.17 until 15.01.18.
