A special screening of Venus Uncovered will take place at the A. G. Leventis Gallery this December.

This film charts the evolution of the goddess Aphrodite from her prehistoric origins, focussing on Cyprus as her birthplace and spiritual home and capturing the island at its most beautiful. As well as showcasing current academic and archaeological research, the film is a visual delight, imagining the island of Cyprus as the very incarnation of Aphrodite and examining the goddess’ iconic status in the fine arts and literature. The production was funded by the A. G. Leventis Foundation in conjunction with Dr Andreas Pittas and produced by SandStone Global Ltd. Venus Uncovered is presented by the award-winning historian, author and broadcaster Professor Bettany Hughes.

Professor Hughes is an award-winning historian, author and broadcaster, who has devoted the past 25 years to the vibrant communication of the past. Her specialty is ancient and medieval history and culture. A scholar at Oxford University, she has taught at Oxford and Cambridge Universities and lectured at Cornell, Bristol, UCL, Maastricht, Utrecht and Manchester. She is a Tutor for Cambridge University’s Institute of Continuing Education and a Research Fellow of King’s College London. She has long drawn attention to women’s position in society, both past and present. She was named as one of the BBC’s 100 Women and was asked to launch the UK’s Inspiring Women mentoring scheme. She also sits on the Women of the World Committee.

Hughes has worked with a team that includes an award-winning director, director of photography and producer, who between them have made over 100 landmark films for the BBC and the global film market.
