About the artist

Titian was taught by Gentile and Giovanni Bellini and also worked with Giorgione, after whose death he rapidly established himself as the leading painter in Venice. He was equally accomplished in painting subjects ranging from portraits, religious scenes, mythology and history. Although his manner changed over the years, he always remained interested in the application and use of colour; that, along with his loose brushwork, had a profound influence on future generations of painters. He was greatly admired in his own day, and his reputation has never faded.
