About the artist

He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1929-1936) and in 1937 left with Yannis Moralis for Rome. He went on to study in Paris on a scholarship from Prince Nicholas in 1939, but had to return to Greece due to World War II. His first solo exhibition was held in 1948; he participated in exhibitions of the ‘Eleftheroi Kallitechnes’, ‘Techni’ and ‘Armos’ groups of artists; he was a founding member of the last. He also took part in international events such as the Biennials of Venice (1936, 1964), Sao Paulo (1957) and Alexandria (1959). In 1964 he became a professor at the Athens School of Fine Arts, where he taught until 1974.   In his book ? ?????????? ??? ??????? ???? ????? [The adventure of line in art] he published his account of his experimentations as an artist. He also practised stage design, mural painting, illustration and painting on stones. Ancient and Renaissance art, Impressionist and Expressionist models, Picasso and Matisse all helped shape his own vocabulary. In his works the focus is on the human figure, especially the female, and the line is the main means of expression, whereas colour remains sparse.
