About the artist

He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Athens (1907-1912). In 1919, on scholarship from the Averoff Bequest, he left for Paris, where he studiedat the Julian and Grande Chaumière academies. He remained in Paris until 1931. His solo exhibition in 1929 in Athens, where he settledin 1931, was very controversial at the time. He made wall-paintings in the city council meeting room in the Athens City Hall (1938-1939),inspired by mythology and the history of the city. He participated in exhibitions of the ‘Techni’ and ‘Stathmi’ groups, the Sao Paulo Bienal(1959) and the Alexandria Biennale (1963). He received the International Guggenheim Award for Greece (1958). Since 1979, his house inZografou, Athens, has been the artist’s museum.   Inspired by ancient Greek pottery decorations, he pursued an unmistakable style of dreamlike and poetic allusions, in which line, light andshadows play key roles.
